FAQS:
After Surgery Hand, Wrist and Elbow
Stitches
Most procedures use dissolving sutures. These do not require removal
and usually are gone in two weeks. Some patients with rheumatoid
arthritis or conditions that may delay wound healing may need nylon
sutures. These are removed two to three weeks after surgery.
Medications
Patients will be given prescriptions for pain medications. In most
circumstances routine medications taken before surgery may be resumed.
Driving
After surgery, most patients will have a bandage that includes a
splint or cast that interferes with hand function to some degree.
Depending on the procedure, this bandage will be removed from
one to two weeks from the operation. During this time most patients
can perform routine daily activities such as dressing and eating,
but may have some difficulties with activities that require precision
hand skills. Additionally, there may be automobile insurance issues.
Work
Patients whose jobs do not involve hand skills can return to work
as soon as they are comfortable. Some patients will require therapy
which may delay a return to work. It is important to discuss the
job description during your office visit so that appropriate arrangements
can be made.
